Postmodernism

After reading the two pieces on Postmodernism, many things stuck out to me. The topic itself is extremely interesting, it's a bunch of ideas thrown together in on big "melting pot". However one thing that was confusing to me was the idea that, "The Disneyland imaginary is neither true nor false: it is a deterrence machine set up in order to rejuvenate in reverse the fiction of the real." I do not understand this statement whatsoever. To me, Disney seems to be pretty imaginary, it has seemed that way since my childhood and still seems that way. I also was confused about why he included Los Angeles in the category of "no longer real".

"The Whole Ball of Wax"

Art in fact can change the world. It has the ability to influence people's thoughts and ideas. It allows them to describe the world around them, such as when the first cave paintings were created. As Saltz said in his article, "Art is a bridge to a new vision and the vision itself, a medium or matrix through which one sees the world, and that grants that pleasure is an important form of knowledge. Art is not optional; it is necessary. It is part of the whole ball of wax" (Saltz). It in fact does provide bridges between people who are completely different and different visions. For example, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French. This allowed us to form a relationship with the French and build connections with them. I believe that art is very necessary and that it is a form of knowledge just like Saltz said.

The Way of Seeing

Sight is a great sense that allows us to perceive the world and the things that are going on around us. However, it is not the only way that we can perceive and take in the many great things in life. It is not possible to completely fathom the world with live in strictly through sight. We can use all of our other senses to grasp a firm outlook on the world. Our sense of taste can allow of to find new foods that we enjoy to eat from a variety of cultures, along with our sense of smell. Our hearing allows us to listen to different forms of art like music. The five senses that we have allow us to take in information in the world in a variety of ways.

Colors Podcast

This podcast, while very long, was also extremely interesting. It was intriguing for a number of reasons. It enlightened me to many different things. I didn't know that everyone perceives colors and the world differently. I did not know that animals see things differently. I heard a rumor that dogs saw in black and white, but I didn't know for sure. It was very interesting to learn about how life on earth perceives colors differently. One very interesting part of the podcast was the fact that some monkeys could only see grey. Originally, that's what I thought all dogs perceived the world in and only dogs. When they said that the monkeys were cured of this disease and there was a difference in their behavior and mood once they could see color I was happy for them. It's also interesting how it could relate to a cure for the same disease in humans.
